The role sits within the Chief Information Officer Division (CIOD), which leads the department’s digital strategy and delivers ICT services that support business operations and digital transformation across the portfolio.

Within CIOD, the ICT Operations Branch is responsible for managing and delivering core ICT services. The role forms part of the End User Services team, which supports enterprise collaboration and communication platforms including Microsoft Exchange, Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, and related Microsoft 365 services.


The Role

We are seeking an experienced Exchange Systems Administrator to support and enhance the department’s enterprise messaging and collaboration environment. The role focuses on the ongoing management of a hybrid Exchange environment, including operational support and migration of services and data to Exchange Online.

This opportunity suits an individual with strong hands‑on experience in Exchange infrastructure, migrations, troubleshooting, and technical documentation within complex enterprise environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain on‑premises Exchange Server infrastructure and associated systems
  • Support and manage Enterprise Vault archiving solutions
  • Plan and execute migrations of mailboxes, groups, and archive data to Exchange Online
  • Develop and implement migration strategies, including archive rationalisation
  • Diagnose and resolve complex incidents across Exchange, mail flow, and hybrid connectivity
  • Create and maintain technical documentation including:
    • As‑built documentation
    • Design and architecture documentation
    • Migration, DR, and decommissioning plans
  • Represent the Exchange technical function in project meetings and workshops
  • Collaborate with related teams, including Service Desk and infrastructure teams
  • Support knowledge transfer and cross‑skilling across ICT Operations

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Expert-level experience administering Exchange Server and Exchange Online, including hybrid deployments in complex environments
  • Proven experience delivering Exchange migrations, including:
    • On‑prem to Exchange Online
    • Cross‑forest migrations
    • Legacy Exchange versions
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills across:
    • Mail flow and transport
    • Mail gateway technologies
    • On‑premises and cloud-based connectivity
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server technologies, including:
    • Active Directory
    • DNS
    • Group Policy (including Advanced Group Policy Management)
  • Experience working within Australian Government cyber security frameworks, including:
    • ISM
    • Essential Eight
    • ACSC hardening guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear, high‑quality technical documentation and SOPs

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with Enterprise Vault (Arctera)
  • Microsoft Purview Information Protection (MPIP)
  • Microsoft Intune and Intune policy management
  • Broader Microsoft 365 services

  • This is a Canberra‑based onsite role
  • Limited work‑from‑home arrangements may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis
  • Candidates must already hold Baseline security clearance at commencement (ability to obtain clearance is not sufficient)
